1988 - Supernova 1987A, pelo 3,6 m ESO/La Silla

Foto publicada em 16 de março de 1988 pelo European Southern Observatory retrata a supernova 1987A, localizada na Grande Nuvem de Magalhães. O telescópio usado foi o de 3,6 metros do observatório de La Silla, auxiliado pelo instrumento EFOCS (Faint Object Spectograph and Camera)


1981 - Fabiana Murer, o estudo do impulso

No dia 16 de março de 1981 nascia em Campinas, São Paulo, a recordista brasileira e sul-americana do salto com vara, Fabiana de Almeida Murer. Fabiana, hoje mãe, iniciou sua trajetória em 1998, conseguindo a marca de 3,66m. Progredindo ano após ano, chegou a 2010 obtendo a marca de 4,85m. É a quarta maior marca já atingida por um ser humano do sexo feminino. Os princípios aplicados no salto com vara são explorados pela astronáutica quando aplica a atração gravitacional dos astros na aceleração das sondas que se destinam a regiões distantes do Sistema Solar.


1889 - Tempel, um emblema do século 19

No dia 16 de março de 1889 morria em Florença, aos 68 anos, o astrônomo saxão Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel, nascido em 1821. Tempel aparece intensamente no decorrer do século 19. Descobriu cerca de 20 cometas e 5 asteróides; foi repelido por Leverrier no Observatório de Paris e encontrou espaço em Marselha; frequentou também o observatório de Leipzig; publicou vários livros e artigos; criticado por Heinrich d"Arrest; deportado de Paris por ser alemão, vai para Milão onde conhece aquele que se tornou seu grande amigo: Giovanni Schiaparelli. Ao lado de Schiaparelli, trabalhando no Observatório de Brera, encerrou uma das mais prolíficas carreiras da história da Astronomia: ao todo, 150 objetos NGC.

1986 - Aleixo Belov parte para a 2º volta ao mundo

Aos 43 anos, em 15 de março de 1986, o marinheiro, construtor naval e autor Aleixo Belov suspendeu de Salvador e partiu, rumo norte, a bordo do veleiro Três Marias para realizar a sua segunda volta ao mundo em solitário. Percorreu 29.741 milhas (via Panamá, Oceano Pacífico, Oceano Índico Norte, Mar Vermelho e Mar Mediterrâneo). Visitou 47 portos em 21 meses e voltou em 19/12/87.

1895 - Auguste Charlois acha o 400º asteróide

No dia 15 de março de 1895 o astrônomo francês Auguste Charlois (1864-1910), trabalhando no Observatório de Nice, descobriu o asteróide 400 Drucosa. Era o 73º de sua lista de 99 asteróides descobertos. Charlois foi um dos últimos astrônomos a usar o método de detecção visual. Em 1891 o astrônomo alemão Max Wolf já havia sido o pioneiro no uso da astrofotografia, método que proporcionou um grande aumento do número de asteróides descobertos nos primeiros vinte anos do século seguinte, 1900.

O primeiro asteróide foi descoberto por Giuzeppe Piazzi em 1801. Cem anos mais tarde, em 1901, havia 464 asteróides descobertos. Com a evolução da tecnologia à disposição dos astrônomos, o quadro atual de asteróides descobertos é este:
